Windland Proposes Idaho’s First Wind Farm

Windland, Inc., headquartered in Boise, is planning to construct the first commercial wind farm in Idaho. The site, on Cotterel Mountain, is in Cassia county southeast of Burley, Idaho. The site covers approximately 4600 acres or about a seven square mile area on lands managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.

Boise, Idaho – August 1, 2002 [] “We are excited to be bringing forward Idaho’s first commercial wind project” said Windland’s President Roald Doskeland. “The state holds considerable potential, so we expect that our project will be the first of many more.” With more than 20 years in the industry, Doskeland, a Boise resident, ranks among the nation’s wind energy pioneers. “Wind generated electricity,” Idaho’s Governor Dirk Kempthorne said, “such as the 200MW project Boise based Windland, Inc has proposed in Cassia County, will provide an opportunity for economic development while offering a reliable and cost-effective addition to our generation portfolio.” Cotterel Mt. site is widely regarded as among the finest potential wind sites in Idaho. Windland has confirmed this assessment with ongoing wind measurement during the past year. Windland expects that its Cotterel Mt. site will total approximately 200 MW, or enough power to supply 40,000 northwest homes for a year. With an excellent wind resource and good access to electric transmission lines, Cotterel Mt. is a logical site for wind energy development. It is also a “great opportunity,” said Carl Hanson, President of the Chamber of Commerce of Minidoka and Cassia counties, to implement his group’s goals. “The Cotterel Mt wind farm is consistent with the Chamber’s plans for the area. It allows us to diversify from our agriculture base and capitalize on what in our area has economic value in the global market. ” During the next year, Windland will conduct environmental and other technical studies in preparation of siting evaluations and other reviews. Construction is expected to begin in Spring 2004. Windland, which currently uses Danish-built equipment for its other wind farms, will employ state of the art, commercially proven European or US wind turbines for its Cotterel Mountain site.
