Vestas Lands 128 MW California Contract

The order from Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) is for delivery, commissioning and 15 years of service and maintenance of the turbines. Delivery is scheduled for the second half of next year for commissioning in early 2012.

“SMUD is a highly respected long-time customer of Vestas and one of the leading utilities in the use of renewable energy,” said Martha Wyrsch, president of Vestas Americas.

“We are extremely pleased to work with SMUD to help create more clean energy in California.”

This order is Vestas’ ninth North American deal this year, contributing to a total of 1,464 MW in capacity distributed between four types of turbine.

Vestas’ manufacturing operations in Colorado, USA, will produce the main components for this order. Blades will come from Vestas’ blade factory in Windsor and tower sections from the firm’s factory in Pueblo. Nacelles for the V90 1.8MW turbines will be assembled at Vestas’ factory in Brighton, while the V90 3 MW nacelles will be assembled in Denmark.

In 2005 Vestas supplied SMUD with 23 V47 660 kW turbines for Solano 1 and in 2007 the firm provided 29 V90 3 MW turbines for Solano 2, the first project in North America to use V90 3 MW turbines.

SMUD is a community-owned electric utility that supplies about 1.1 million people with electricity across a 2,300 km² territory that includes Sacramento County and a small portion of Placer County. Founded in 1946, it is the USA’s sixth-largest public utility.
