Voith Hydro has been selected to continue a US$34.37 million hydro turbine modernization project at the 414-MW Chavantes hydroelectric plant on Brazil’s Paranapanema River.
The project is a continuation of work Voith Hydro began in 1999, when the company modernized the control systems of Chavantes’ 103.5-MW Unit 4.
Voith will now extend the job to the hydroelectric station’s other three units, with work to include refurbishment of the remaining generators and the replacement of their Francis turbine runners.
Voith said the project is intended to upgrade turbine efficiency and extend the life of the Chavantes plant.
Chavantes is located in the southwest region of Sao Paulo state and is operated by Duke Energy.
HydroWorld.com reported earlier this week that Voith had also been selected for work at two Tractebel Energia-owned hydroelectric projects — both also located in Brazil.
