The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has extended the deadline for comments from contractors on its plan for up to 14 hydro turbine replacements at 980-MW McNary Dam on the Columbia River. Comments now are due May 14.
The Corps’ Walla Walla District, which originally called for comments by May 7, said it extended the deadline at industry request.
As a result of Turbine Survival Program studies on fish at McNary, the Corps plans to install new turbine runners with fish passage improvements at McNary, in Umatilla, Ore. The Corps awarded a contract in March to Yanke Machine Shop to supply vertical barrier fish screen mesh panels at the project.
The Corps now says it anticipates contracts for design, supply, and installation of turbine runners and other hydro turbine components over an extended period at McNary. The project has 14 turbines, all of which are under consideration for turbine replacement. The agency anticipates a two- to three-year design effort followed by supply and installation of up to two turbines per year.
The Corps said it is considering two approaches: a single contract for design, supply and installation, or two contracts, one for design and supply and a second for installation. The agency requested comments on interest, feasibility, and other issues related to the two approaches.
It also asked contractors to discuss ability to bond and the method of bonding a project of this magnitude and duration.
