Comverge partners with Gulf Power for advanced energy management and metering initiative in New York City

FLORHAM PARK, N.J., May 14, 2002 — Comverge Technologies Inc. has partnered with Gulf Power, Energy Investment Systems (EIS), and other partners for an energy management and advanced metering initiative in New York City.

The initiative is designed to assist Manhattan building owners and their tenants to reduce electricity use, free-up desperately needed power capacity and realize significant cost savings.

New York is in dire need of greater power capacity. The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) recently called for the immediate approval of 3,000 megawatts of new generating capacity to avoid serious electricity shortages and avoid price spikes. Robert M. Chiste, Chief Executive Officer of Comverge, “The ultimate goal of the project is to service hundreds of buildings in New York City by empowering tenants to more effectively manage their power consumption and reduce expenses. This advanced metering initiative is a fine example of the kinds of projects that our Enterprises group focuses on to create recurring revenue and increasing value for our owners.”

Because of New York’s on-going energy crisis, NYISO and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), support emergency and day-ahead curtailment programs and energy efficiency incentives. Both the NYISO and NYSERDA are enthusiastic participants in Comverge’s advanced metering and price-sensitive energy management project currently underway.

Comverge Enterprises group, which develops, acquires, and operates power monitoring systems, and creates Virtual Peaking Capacityà¢â€ž- through negawatt power purchase agreements, alliances, and joint ventures, works closely with building owners and tenants. “By partnering with Gulf Power and EIS,” Chiste stated, “Comverge Enterprises group enables advanced metering and price- responsive demand services which benefit building owners and tenants by creating a consistent metering structure to detail the amount of electricity used and its associated cost.”

Step one of the project involves sub-metering individual apartments, which currently use a master meter for the entire building or individual direct meters for each apartment. Chiste stated, “Our team looks forward to expediting this project. Our strategy is to complete the sub-metering and full deployment of Comverge’s Maingateà¢â€ž- Home multi-meter energy gateways and PowerCAMPà¢â€ž- energy intelligence software, at 350 of those buildings within the next three years.”

Owners and tenants will have a variety of energy management applications at their disposal, including automated meter reading (AMR), real-time pricing, time-of-use (TOU) tiered pricing, price-responsive demand, and outage detection.
