Cape Town, South Africa, March 16, 2012 — South Africa has the potential to deploy 10 GW to 15 GW of wind power capacity, according to the South African Energy Research Institute.
The best wind power sites in the country are comparable to the best sites globally, but not all the sites outlined in the map will be developed as the projects will depend on grid accessibility, agricultural and environmental conditions.
The map, which consists of ten atlas masts and costs $2.9 million, showed that the country’s wind potential was equal to the potential of countries such as Denmark, Germany and India.
