At the time, Andrew was the costliest hurricane in U.S. history. The storm damaged oil wells, killed freshwater fish, downed trees and left 177,000 people homeless. Storm surge from Andrew caused more than $500 million in losses to boats and a hotel, which had its lobby flooded with 3 feet of water. At the height of the storm, more than 1.4 million people lost electricity.
