The U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) has awarded a US$669,875 grant to Turkey’s Electricity Generation Company (EUAS) to feasibility studies for a 17 MW hydrokinetic power project.
Working with New York-based marine and hydrokinetic (MHK) developer Verdant Power and Virginia-based consulting group Ko-Tech, the study will evaluate the use of MHK near the Seyhan project near Adana.
“USTDA is pleased to support Turkey’s efforts to augment its clean and renewable resource development, supplementing its dependence on fossil fuel power sources,” regional director Carl B. Kress said. “The cutting-edge U.S. hydrokinetic technology, which will be evaluated for the Seyhan plant, demonstrates Turkey’s leadership in exploring new clean energy sources.”
The project would use existing infrastructure such as substation power transmission and distribution lines, UTSDA said, creating as many as 200 temporary construction jobs and 20 permanent operations and maintenance jobs.
“Verdant Power is incredibly excited about the prospects of this effort,” Verdant Power co-founder Trey Taylor said. “Not only does it support clean energy development internationally, but it establishes a model for the global export of U.S.-based MHK technologies and expertise.”
If ultimately installed, the Seyhan project would generated $32.5 million in opportunities for America’s MHK sector through design, manufacturing and equipment services, Verdant said.
The company is also currently involved in the development of a project in New York City’s East River.
