Layoffs at Philadelphia Gas Works authorized

In an effort to stave off layoffs, PGW management has been holding informal discussions with its union leadership in the hopes that the parties could negotiate a new labor agreement that was fair to employees and affordable in light of the company’s dire financial straits. Formal negotiations with the Gas Works Employees’ Union Local 686 broke off on August 13, 2001, 90 days after the old contract expired in May.
