Aquamarine Power Ltd. continues its development of new hydro technology and the Edinburgh, Scotland-based wave energy company has also selected John Malcolm as its new Chief Executive Officer. Former CEO, Martin McAdam, stepped down after serving in the post since 2007.
Malcolm is a chartered engineer and he holds a PhD from Heriot-Watt University. The former Aquamarine Power board member begins his tenure helming the company that is involved in the pan-European WavePOD collaboration to deploy apparatus for its Oyster 800 wave technology. The prototype WavePOD will experience real-world, sea wave conditions on the Oyster 800 machine, scheduled for testing in 2016 at the European Marine Energy Center in Orkney, Scotland.
The WavePOD comprises an offshore hydraulic generator housed in a sealed nacelle that generates electrical power that is then cabled back to shore, according to the company. It is hoped the WavePOD device will harness ocean energy and provide an industry-wide power take off that will generate electricity reliably and cost effectively. The move will also produce renewable energy while having low environmental impact.
Malcolm’s resume includes serving on the Aquamarine Power Board as a non-executive director since May 2012; a member of the company’s Technical Committee; working since 1989 in several capacities with Royal Dutch Shell plc; and holding positions as Managing Director of Petroleum Development for Oman LLC in Oman, and General Manager and Managing Director of the Syrian-based Al Furat Petroleum Co.
