NY Wind Firm Drops Offshore Wind Plans

July 25, 2003[SolarAccess.com]Winergy LLC, based in Shirley, N.Y., has scrapped plans for a 10-turbine wind farm in Ipswich Bay, Massachusetts, according to the Gloucester Daily Times. The company dropped the Ipswich Bay site and three other potential locations as a result of strong community opposition to the locations, leaving four possible sites in Massachusetts. According to Gloucester paper, many of the 75 Gloucester, Essex and Ipswich residents who attended an April public hearing objected to the proposal, which was going through the Department of Environmental Protection’s process to develop a draft environmental impact statement. Winergy still is applying for permission to install wind turbines at three sites near Provincetown, Nantucket and Davis Bank. Residents of these areas seemed more receptive to the proposal, so Winergy thought it was a better investment to spend money researching the potential environmental impacts on these sites, according to the company.
