GE Energy Tapped for 990 MW of Wind Power

GE Energy was recently selected by wind project developers Cartier Wind Energy and Northland Power to build eight wind farms across Canada that will total 990 MW of potential energy production for Hydro-Quebec, which commissioned the projects.

Cartier was awarded six projects totaling 740 MW for a contract total of approximately $1.2 billion, and Northland was awarded a contract for 250 MW of power. Work on the projects will begin in 2006 and develop through 2012, and GE will supply wind turbines to both developers. “Hydro-Quebec’s solicitation underscores its forethought and leadership in supporting Quebec’s energy initiatives, and expedites the delivery of new renewable capacity to the people of Quebec,” said Steve Zwolinski, CEO of GE Energy’s wind power division. GE will supply up to 660 wind turbines total, and will set up facilities to enable up to 60 percent of the wind energy components, materials and services to be supplied, manufactured and assembled locally. The units will feature low voltage ride-through technology and the capability to operate in extremely cold weather. GE will also provide operation and maintenance services under multi-year contracts that are currently being negotiated. Cartier’s projects will benefit the Gaspe region, and are located in the municipalities of Mont Louis (211.5 MW), Gaspe (100.5 MW), Carleton (109.5 MW), Baie des Sables (109.5 MW), Les Mechins (150 MW) and Cloridorme (58.5 MW). The development company is a consortium of Innergex, TransCanada Energy and Renewable Energy Systems USA, while Northland Power is a leading Canadian developer of independent power projects. The solicitation, initiated by Hydro-Quebec under a 2003 request for proposals to supply 1,000 MW of new wind power capacity by 2012, supports Quebec’s 2003 government Decrees 352 and 353, which call for that amount of additional wind capacity. Power generated by the projects will be provided to Hydro-Quebec Distribution for the area’s power supply needs. Currently, Canada’s installed wind energy capacity totals 372 MW, including 113.25 MW in Quebec. Forecasts by the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CANWEA) anticipate the installation of 10,000 MW of wind power across the country by 2010.
