EU to Launch RE Initiative

September 4, 2002 [] The European Union will soon launch an initiative linking European and developing countries that are interested in setting specific targets for encouraging Renewable Energy, Environment Commissioner Margot Wallstroem said. She described it as a “coalition of the willing” – countries that wanted to go beyond the vaguer commitment spelt out in the Earth Summit’s draft action plan for encouraging solar and wind power and other renewable sources. The summit negotiators reached an agreement recently on Renewable Energy sources, the last major hurdle in an action plan, after the US and oil-producing countries teamed up to force a climb down by the European Union. It has set no percentage target, nor any deadline.
