Denmark Aims High With New Energy Goals

“Denmark will once again be the global leader in the transition to green energy” says Martin Lidegaard, minister for climate, energy and building. Last Friday, Folketinget (the Danish parliament) confirmed that the country had amped up their energy goals.

The goal is 35% of the country’s energy consumption coming from renewable sources of energy by 2020 and 100% by 2050.  In addition to this, 50% of electricity should come from wind power.

 

What are the results of these goals?

If Denmark is successful with their new goals, CO2 emissions will be with 34% less in 2020 then they were in 1990. Energy consumption will decrease with as much as 12% from in 2020 compared to 2006.

It is not only important to contribute to the fight against global warming, but investing in renewable energy will also result in many new jobs, and protect the country from further price increases in oil and coal.

“Large changes will be made over the next decade. However, with this agreement the parties have started a transition that will strengthen the competitiveness of Danish businesses and ensure that citizens will not be subjected to exorbitant price increases on fossil fuels,” says Martin Lidegaard.

Denmark is already among the top when it comes to wind power. The country’s wind farms power over one fifth of the energy demand.

“Investments are necessary if we are to switch society towards green energy. But the bill will be much bigger if we do not act in time. At the same time, the transition will benefit climate mitigation and the environment, and it will ensure the future competitiveness of Danish industry. With this agreement, the parties are sending a clear message that we all assume responsibility and are taking the challenges of the future seriously. It is truly a great day for energy policy in Denmark.”  Says Martin Lidegaard.
