Ormat Nevada, announced that its subsidiaries were successful in an auction for all the geothermal assets of Covanta Energy Corporation, an unrelated third party. Covanta Energy Corporation filed for bankruptcy protection in April 2002. The US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York, which has jurisdiction over Covanta's Chapter 11 case, has approved the purchase agreement.

Southern States Power Company (SSPC), a member of the National Biodiesel Board, has entered into an acquisition agreement to own 100 percent of SUN Utility Network, a solar energy company, contingent upon a 90 day review of SUN's past, current and future contracts. The addition of SUN's solar power contracts, which SSPC says have projected gross profits of over US$7 million, is designed to augment SSPC's renewable power portfolio as the company moves forward on projects across the United States.

EnXco, was recently awarded a contract for 200 MW of wind power from an Xcel Energy all-source energy bidding process. The Fenton Wind Power Project--the next phase of enXco wind power in Southwestern Minnesota--will be located near the town of Chandler, in Murray County, Minnesota.

It’s not an entirely renewable operation but Southern Company is now using switchgrass and other local grasses formed into small cubes to generate electricity. The grass cubes are being mixed with coal at Southern Company's Plant Mitchell, near Albany, Georgia. Mitchell is owned and operated by the company's Georgia Power subsidiary.

With environmental quality and the U.S. dependence on foreign oil creating mounting concerns, members of both the public and private sectors are looking at fuel cells as a potential long-term solution.

March 26, 2003 [] New Zealand- based Meridian Energy successfully bid for Southern Hydro, a hydroelectric business in Victoria that operates ten stations with a total generating capacity of 540 MW outputting approximately 940 GWh. Southern Hydro has been sold by Alliant Energy of the United States.
