Toronto Approves Fuel Cell Demo Project

Toronto City Council has approved a three-year project in which the City’s Energy Efficiency Office, Fleet Services Division, in partnership with Hydrogenics Corporation and Exhibition Place, will demonstrate the unique ability of fuel cell technology to provide mobile and stationary power with no harmful emissions. The demonstration will allow the public to learn about hydrogen and fuel cells as the energy of the future in a hands-on setting.

Toronto, Canada – April 16, 2003 [SolarAccess.com] Toronto City Council has approved a three-year project in which the City’s Energy Efficiency Office, Fleet Services Division, in partnership with Hydrogenics Corporation and Exhibition Place, will demonstrate the unique ability of fuel cell technology to provide mobile and stationary power with no harmful emissions. The demonstration will allow the public to learn about hydrogen and fuel cells as the energy of the future in a hands-on setting. “Canada is home to some of the leading developers of fuel cell technology, which has the potential to change the environmental equation when it comes to power generation,” said Councillor Mario Silva, chair of the Board of Governors, Exhibition Place. “This demonstration project will show that not only is this technology real, but that Toronto is prepared to embrace this technology and be a leading global centre for its commercialization.” The demonstration project will be done in three phases: Phase One of the demonstration project will take place this summer. In this phase, Hydrogenics’ 50 kW HySTAT Fuel Cell Stationary Generator, developed with funding from Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), will demonstrate “peak shaving” at the National Trade Center. To do this it will supply power to the Exhibition grounds during periods of high electricity consumption when power is more expensive to buy, typically in the late afternoon and early evening. During the 2003 CNE period, Hydrogenics and its partner, John Deere, plan to also operate a fuel cell-powered John Deere Pro Gator vehicle on the grounds to demonstrate how fuel cell technology can deliver substantial benefits by providing quiet, zero emissions power to vehicles. The John Deere vehicle will refuel with hydrogen from the natural gas reformer that is integrated with the HySTAT. This refuelling apparatus is being developed with Hydrogenics’ recently announced funding from NRCan’s Canadian Transportation Fuel Cell Alliance. Phase Two of the project is planned for the summer of 2004. In this phase the 50 kW HySTAT Fuel Cell Stationary Generator will continuously offset the electricity required at the National Trade Center to demonstrate how the durability of fuel cell systems is making progress toward being able to supply continuous, or primary, power. This is an important step if fuel cells are to compete with existing power technologies. In Phase Three the Company will seek an opportunity to incorporate a Renewable Energy source to supply electricity to power a Hydrogenics electrolyser unit to make hydrogen, for example wind or solar power. This hydrogen may be used to refuel a fuel cell-powered 40-foot passenger bus that Hydrogenics is developing with other industry partners with funding from NRCan and the Province of Manitoba. By using wind or solar power to power the electrolyser, this will demonstrate how hydrogen and fuel cells enable a totally clean and renewable solution for power. “The demonstration will show the public the state of the art of fuel cell technology that Hydrogenics is developing right here in the GTA,” said Pierre Rivard, president and CEO of Hydrogenics. “It will showcase some of the commercial possibilities, as well as the enormous environmental benefits of introducing fuel cell technology on its own and with other types of renewable power generation. The Exhibition Place has a strong tradition of unveiling technology ‘firsts’ and we are proud to be part of that ongoing tradition.”
