SSE to Develop Sloy Pumped-Storage Hydro Plant

SSE Generation Ltd, the wholly owned generation business of Scottish and Southern Energy, has received consent from the Scottish Government to develop a 60-MW pumped-storage hydro project at its existing Sloy hydropower station at Loch Lomond, SSE reported.

Sloy, commissioned in 1950, is currently the largest conventional hydro station in the United Kingdom and was the first scheme built by the North of Scotland Hydro Electric Board (NoSHEB). The construction of a new pumping station will enable SSE to provide an additional 100GWh of electricity in a typical year to help meet peak demand, reports indicate.

The new pumping station will enable water to be pumped from Loch Lomond to Loch Sloy during times of low electricity demand, which will then allow the storage of energy ready to be used during periods of high demand.

In other news, Scottish and Southern Energy said electricity production at its 100-MW Glendoe hydropower plant should resume in the first half of 2012 now that construction of new tunnels at the plant is fully under way.

SSE had to shut the plant down in August 2009 after rock falls partially blocked the main tunnel carrying water from the reservoir to the power station, according to Dow Jones Newswires. The shutdown has crimped SSE’s total power output, but had only a small impact on overall earnings.
