[RenewableEnergyAccess.com] SMA gained some bragging rights from the recent Solar Decathlon competition held in Washington, DC. The inverter company’s Sunny Boy Solar powered systems finished the 2nd annual competition with a clean sweep in the Energy Balance competition. The Decathlon challenges teams to design the most energy efficient home, using only power generated from the sun. As its name implies, there are 10 separate competition categories ranging from architecture to power system integration to comfort. The competition most directly related to the power system, Energy Balance, measures how efficiently each house’s power system utilizes solar energy to power the home appliances throughout the three-week contest. The three teams sponsored by SMA finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Energy Balance competition using Sunny Island 4248U off-grid/back-up inverters coupled with Sunny Boy PV inverters. SMA’s AC coupled power systems were used by Crowder College from Neosho, MO, the winners of the Energy Balance Competition. Virginia Tech from Blacksburg, VA, placed 2nd in Energy Balance and the University of Texas, Austin from Austin, TX, placed 3rd in Energy Balance.
