Rhode Island Customers Buy Green

September 27, 2004 [SolarAccess.com] Utility customers in Rhode Island have taken a liking to the GreenUp campaign for renewable energy certificates (REC). The campaign is funded through a grant from the Rhode Island Renewable Energy Fund (RIREF), and over 1,100 residential and small business customers of the Narragansett Electric Company joined the program during the first 100 days. RIREF hired SmartPower to promote the clean energy program. In a poll conducted by SmartPower, Rhode Island residents cited family health concerns and an over reliance on foreign oil as reasons to choose Narragansett Electric’s voluntary GreenUp program. Customers who join the program pay an extra monthly charge for REC purchases and remain with Narragansett Electric.
