EPRI releases report on aerating turbine project
EPRI announces availability of its Hydropower Technology Roundup Report: Technology Update on Aerating Turbines.
This report supplements a 2002 report, Maintaining and Monitoring Dissolved Oxygen at Hydroelectric Projects: Status Report. The 2002 report provided a comprehensive review of a wide range of techniques and technologies for improving the dissolved oxygen (DO) levels in releases from hydroelectric projects. The new report focuses primarily on aerating turbine technologies for new turbine installations and for turbine upgrades.
This report documents hydraulic and environmental performance for three turbine aeration technologies from two turbine manufacturers. The report draws information from a review of the technical literature from 1998 through 2009 and direct contact with personnel from turbine manufacturing companies, utilities, and agencies.
The new report describes some of the difficulties in assessing the performance of aerating turbines and provides detailed case studies for three aerating turbine technologies (central, peripheral, and distributed aeration). The report discusses the implications of these case study results for plant operation and optimization and makes recommendations for additional related research.
This report will be a discussion topic at EPRI’s industry review meeting, to be held in conjunction with the HydroVision International event. The meeting will be Tuesday, July 27 in Charlotte, N.C.

New York Power Authority funding energy research center
A $500,000 grant from the New York Power Authority (NYPA) will be used to support energy research by the Advanced Energy Research and Technology Center at Stony Brook University in New York.
The grant is intended to support efforts to advance innovative energy research, education, and technology deployment with a focus on efficiency, conservation, and renewable energy that will establish New York State as a leader in the clean energy economy, NYPA says.
Research at the center is expected to focus on the needs of the state’s utilities, such as transmission, the smart grid, and utility scale renewables.
In addition, both NYPA and the Advanced Energy Research and Technology Center have committed to work toward a potential future smart grid project, which would be funded in part by an additional NYPA grant of up to $250,000. This work would include modeling and simulation of a smart grid, interoperability of smart grid systems, or smart grid cyber security.
NYPA is the largest state-owned electric utility in the U.S. NYPA has 18 generating facilities. About 75 percent of the electricity it produces comes from hydroelectric plants.
The center is a partnership between academic and research institutions, energy providers, and industrial corporations.
