Politics and Clean Power Mix at Conventions

June 23, 2004 [SolarAccess.com] Democratic and Republican national convention committees have welcomed proposals and support offered by the Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Conventions (CERC) to provide renewable energy for the presidential conventions this year. The coalition is comprised of environmental groups from the Boston and New York areas. CERC has completed most of the arrangements for the Democratic convention in Boston by matching the anticipated electricity use at the Fleet Center and purchasing $11,000 of renewable energy certificates. Carbon credits are being sought that would offset carbon emissions stemming from other convention activities, including transportation of the convention’s delegates. According to reporting in the Boston Globe, “Convention organizers haven’t agreed to all the suggestions, but they plan to adopt as many as practical.”
