It’s Easy Being Green

The Green Schools Initiative has been giving money to districts to promote energy efficient buildings since 2001. Officials said the pilot program, still in its early stages, has shown that schools need not spend a lot of green to be “green.” Simple design elements, such as including more windows or placing a building in a north-south direction to lower electricity costs, can help make a building “green,” said representatives from the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative, the state’s agency for developing renewable energy. These methods, combined with more high-tech equipment like solar panels and HVAC units that automatically adjust air flow, help schools save energy and money.
