Fuel Cell Prototype Car Advances India Technology

July 20, 2004 [SolarAccess.com] Technology awards in New Delhi recognized the county’s first fuel cell prototype car, the REVA, as a technology advance that brings the country up to speed with “auto giants world wide.” The fuel cell car was developed by the REVA Electric Car Company (RECC). Government departments have supported the company’s efforts during the prototype’s development. Fuel cell cars are not expected to reach the mass market for some time, but RECC hopes to be among the makers and distributors of the technology when it becomes more accessible to the public. Support from India’s President Abdul Kalam was also credited for making the REVA possible because he worked on federal space and defense programs in the 1980s, and created a technology road map, Technology Vision 2020, to guide India toward status as a developed nation.
