Long Island homeowners can take advantage of some of the largest incentives available in the country for installing solar electricity systems for their homes – up to the full cost of a system – but they’ve got to act quickly.MARLBORO, Massachusetts – June 5, 2002 [SolarAccess.com] Two solar energy firms, Evergreen Solar, Inc. and Solar Works, Inc., have teamed up to help homeowners meet the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) July 31, 2002 deadline to qualify the for US$6-per-watt rebate. Evergreen Solar, a developer, marketer, and manufacturer of photovoltaic products for the worldwide market, and Solar Works, which specializes in design and installation of solar systems for private homes and businesses, are offering the Sunplicity(TM) PV systems to Long Island homeowners. “Long Island homeowners can also get the added bonus of a 25 percent tax credit toward the total cost of a PV system, up to US$3,750,” said Rex D’Agostino, Evergreen’s Vice President of Marketing and Sales. “There’s never been a better time to install a PV system that can not only help the environment but also promote energy independence, and do it so affordably.” After July 31, incentives of US$4-per-watt, or up to 50 percent off a system, will still be available through the LIPA program. “Solar power is clean, Renewable Energy,” said Richard Eidlin, Solar Works Vice President of Marketing and Sales. “Homeowners can actually use excess energy produced by solar systems to turn their electric meters backwards, a process called `net metering.’ And these LIPA incentives are among the best available in the country right now.” Sunplicity systems, which feature Evergreen’s solar panels, are ideal for families and small businesses, and are tied to the utility grid. These systems optionally include batteries to provide some backup power in the event of a power failure. Because they are modular, they can be ordered in a variety of sizes, from 440 watts to 5 kilowatts or more. The solar panels come with a 20-year warranty and are made using Evergreen’s patented String Ribbon(TM) technology, which can produce approximately twice as many solar cells per pound of silicon when compared to traditional methods. This contributes to making Evergreen’s manufacturing technology among the most environmentally friendly processes in the industry. Evergreen Solar is one of the few fully-integrated, independent PV manufacturers in the U.S., producing solar wafers, cells, and panels. Solar Works has been installing solar electric systems throughout Long Island for several years. Based in Vermont, the company maintains offices throughout the Northeast, including New York.
