EPA Releases Top 25 Green Power Purchasers

[RenewableEnergyAccess.com] The U.S. EPA has released a list of the final Top 25 for 2005 — highlighting the largest purchasers in the Green Power Partnership. While the U.S. Air Force maintained its spot as the top purchaser of green power — a rank that it has held since the Top 25 list started in September 2004 — the big news coming out of this updated list is the new top corporate purchaser. Whole Foods, which was previously No. 8 on the Top 25 list, is now the largest U.S corporate purchaser. Other movement within the list includes: Starbucks claiming the No. 6 position and becoming the third largest corporate purchaser, and FedEx Kinko’s climbing to No. 19 from No. 24. The actions of the Top 25 Partners are helping to drive the development of new renewable energy sources of electricity generation. Combined, the Top 25 purchases amount to 3.3 million megawatt hours (MWh) of green power annually. That is enough renewable energy to power approximately 330,000 homes a year. The Top 25 Partners are also responsible for 75 percent of the green power purchases made by all Partners.
