“In November 2015, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 to provide 75 percent of Dubai’s total power output from clean energy by 2050,” a press release says.
The facility will make use of one existing reservoir. The reservoir impounded by Al Hattawi Dam is 400 meters above sea level and has a capacity of 1,716 million gallons. An upper reservoir will be built 700 meters above sea level, 3 to 4 kilometers from Al Hattawi Dam reservoir. Solar energy will be used to power the hydro turbines to pump water from the lower reservoir to the upper reservoir.
The project is expected to have a life span of 60 to 80 years.
DEWA says the project will create more than 2,000 jobs during the implementation phase and more than 200 permanent technical and administrative jobs to oversee the operation and maintenance of the station and its facilities. Another 300 jobs are expected to be created for the Visitor and Tourist Centre, outdoor activities, and the accommodations and visiting facilities associated with the project.
Other benefits of the project beyond electricity supply include irrigation, flood control and drinking water supplies.
