Community Projects Promote Renewable Energy in China

China Light and Power (CLP) is putting its recently released “Manifesto on Air Quality and Climate Change” into action by funding HK $1 million (US $128,619) in community projects for renewable energy.

Project selections were conducted by a Renewable Energy Fund committee, and based on five criteria: feasibility, innovation, educational benefits, value for money and relevance to Hong Kong. The CLP Renewable Energy Fund was established in 2003 to help raise awareness and promote practical applications of renewable energy in Hong Kong. “We’re delighted with the amount of applications and the tremendous input in the proposals, each of which has demonstrated a high level of creative and intelligent thinking which made the selection a difficult job for the committee,” said Gail Kendall, who is CLP’s group director for Environment, and facilitator of the projects committee. “These projects reflect an increasing awareness that renewable energy will become an important part of our energy future. More importantly these projects will complement on-going research, capacity building, policy development, commercial development.” Projects selected for funding (all amounts are in HK$): – The C.C.C. Kei Wai Primary School (Ma Wan), $100,000 for a renewable energy educational program at the school, which will benefit both the students and the community. – Chong Yuk Piu, $30,000 for research of a vertical axis wind turbines installed in series connections. – Tai Po Old Market Public School (Plover Cove), $97,800 for an educational program to research and develop a wind facility for electricity storage and night lighting. – The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Department of Automation and Computer-Aided Engineering, $250,000 to research and develop a pumpless absorption air conditioner powered by solar heat and waste heat sources. – The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Department of Applied Biology and Chemistry Technology, $199,800 to develop a hands-on educational program display of renewable energy demonstration units. – The University of Hong Kong, Centre of Urban Planning and Environmental Management, $80,776 to research the capacity of Hong Kong to adopt fuel cell technology for public transportation – Xi Ju Zhi An Pai, $49,500 to develop workshops and a drama competition to educate students about renewable energy.
