Canada Promotes Green Roof Initiative

October 16, 2002 [] Canadian officials demonstration the National Research Council-led Green Roof Initiative and announced findings of a major study completed by Environment Canada indicating how green roofs can save millions of dollars in energy consumption, improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The project consists of planting vegetation on building rooftops using infrastructure technology such as highly water-and-root-repellant membranes. NRC has facilitated the installation of the roofing systems, located on two green roof sites in Toronto, and will monitor their performance over the next two years.
