A Xantrex XFR Series programmable power supply is helping the McMaster University Solar Car Project team fine tune the electronics on the team’s Fireball II solar car. The team’s first race with the car will be the Formula Sun Grand Prix, an international closed course race that will take place May 19-21, 2004, in Topeka, Kansas.Burnaby, British Columbia – May 11, 2004 [SolarAccess.com] “The solar car project is one of the first real tests of a student’s engineering knowledge,” said Larry Soldaty, director of North American sales for Xantrex programmable power products. “We’re pleased that our test and measurement equipment can help the solar car team to improve the performance and reliability of their solar powered vehicle.” Xantrex said their XFR power supplies are easy to use and designed to provide engineers with high power density and industry-leading reliability. “Xantrex’s XFR programmable power supply is a vital component in the development of our vehicle. The Xantrex XFR series has an optional, internally installed microprocessor-controlled Ethernet/RS-232 Interface card that enables engineers to remotely control power supplies through an existing IP network or via a direct connection to a PC. With the option card installed, the XFR can communicate directly with LANs, WANs, WiFi and Internet networks, making it ideal for automated test equipment and other applications where engineers require remote control and monitoring. To maximize efficiency and reduce mean time between failures (MTBF), the Xantrex XFR Series uses “soft switching” to eliminate noisy switching transients that generate wasted heat and stress the power transistors.
