Visa celebrates reaching 2020 renewable energy goal

Digital payments solutions firm Visa has reached its goal of powering its operations from energy generated from renewables only by 2020.

The company is now using renewable energy at its 131 offices in 76 countries and four processing centers.

This means Visa has reduced operational emissions by 90% versus the company’s 2014 baseline.

The goal to become 100% renewable energy powered was set in 2018. Since then, Visa has worked with local utilities and competitive electricity market providers and made local renewable electricity investments in markets where the company has major facilities.

For instance, in the UK and US, Visa enrolled in renewable energy programs provided by Total, Xcel Energy, Austin Energy and Peninsula Clean Energy.

Visa also joined and followed the guidelines of RE100, a global collaborative of influential businesses committed to 100% renewable power led by The Climate Group.

The firm became a member of the Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance and signed the Renewable Energy Buyers’ Principles.

Al Kelly, chief executive officer of Visa Inc, said: “At Visa, we see both a responsibility and an opportunity to make broad shifts toward a sustainable and inclusive future.

“I’m proud of the investments we’ve made in our infrastructure to reach this important renewable energy milestone. We will continue to prioritize advancing the role of our business and industry in transitioning to a cleaner global economy.”

The energy transition is front and center at Enlit Europe (Milan, Italy – October 27-29, 2020), POWERGEN (Orlando Florida USA – December 8-10, 2020) and DISTRIBUTECH (San Diego, California USA, February 9-11, 2021).
