UK Solar-Powered Speed Warning Lights

April 6, 2004 [SolarAccess.com] With the help of Gwent based SolarGen Solutions, Newport City Council has installed Wales’ first solar-powered Variable Messaging Sign (VMS) on the A48 between Langstone and Chepstow. Drivers traveling above the speed limit will trigger the sign, which flashes ‘Slow/Araf’ & 60-speed roundel as a warning to slow down. A pioneer in the use of ‘green’ energy, Newport City Council was the first local authority on UK mainland to install a solar powered street lighting schemes linked to the National Grid.
