UK Gov’t Awards Solar Grants

[] Designed to meet the UK’s longer term need for clean electricity supplies, several solar energy projects will share more than $2.7 million in funding, according to UK Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks. Among 18 environmentally friendly projects are London’s Regent Street and an Eco Centre in Wales. A 16th century Grade II Elizabethan farmhouse in Shropshire has been given more than $54,000 so that it can be converted into a carbon-neutral eco-home. Housing development and education centre schemes have also been given the go-ahead. The applicants add to the proportion of the UK’s energy that comes from renewable sources, contributing toward the UK’s goal of 10 percent renewable energy by 2010.
