Chris O’Brien, head of market development at Oerlikon Solar, describes in detail several major announcements the company is releasing in conjunction with PV SEC (Valencia, Spain).
The company’s “Think Thin” strategy has paid off and resulted in its new Thin Fab line that incorporates a number of improvements in its micromorph thin film technology as well as throughput and line yield. As a result of these improvements, the line has an ~25% lower capex. O’Brien reports that the company has achieved a US$0.70/Watt cost of production and a 10% stabilized module efficiency. He also discusses the company’s improvements in laser tools used by the production line, and recaps work with Dupont on its reflective back sheet.
The company also reports that as a result of its work with Corning Glass, it has achieved a record R&D cell efficiency of 11.9%.
