Solar-Powered Ferris Wheel

October 14, 2003 [] Children in California have an educational excuse to visit a theme park by taking a field trip to Santa Monica’s Pacific Park to ride on a solar-powered Ferris wheel. The Ferris wheel whisks visitors up more than nine stories high for spectacular views of the Californian coastline. The 130ft Pacific Wheel, unveiled in 1998 as the world’s first solar-powered Ferris wheel, runs on electricity generated by 650 Shell Solar mono-crystalline solar panels, powered by the most abundant source of energy, the sun. The 50 kW solar system provides enough electricity to power the Pacific Wheel during the day, while at night the wheel’s energy comes from the grid.
