Solar Power Aids Firefighters

[] Firesight of Melbourne, Australia has developed a fire barrier for telephone and power poles that uses solar power to run the device’s deployment mechanism. After watching bush fires destroy the telecommunications infrastructure in Canberra, the company designed a device that monitors heat and air conditions for fires. When the device, which looks like metal ring positioned near the top of a telephone pole, detects severe fire conditions it drops a flame-proof barrier around the pole for fire protection. The solar-powered, actuated drive developed by the company is pending a patent, and specifically does not need to rely on the power infrastructure in order to work during an emergency.
