Transportation officials in the city were receiving complaints from passengers who were not able to see the timetables in the dark and there was concern for their safety. A button at the bus stop activates the light for about five minutes. The introduction of the solar powered lights ties in with the city hosting PlanetYork, a year-long project to make York the most energy efficient city in the United Kingdom.
