Solar Decathlon Kicks off Despite Darkening Skies

September 26, 2002 [] Despite ominous weather forecasts, due to the remnants of tropical storm Isodore, the Solar Decathlon is kicking off today in on The National Mall in Washington D.C. The event is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, along with its National Renewable Energy Laboratory and a host of other sponsors. Running until October 6, 2002, 14 college student teams, who built the houses, will compete to capture, covert, store and use enough solar energy to power the small households, including a home-based business. During the Decathlon’s ten contests the home may only use solar energy available within the perimeter of the house.
