Chigasaki, Japan [RenewableEnergyWorld.com] Following a two year period of research and planning, NexPower Technology Corporation, a subsidiary of United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC), has decided to establish a new solar cell manufacturing plant in Taiwan through a contract with ULVAC.
NexPower has signed an agreement to use ULVAC’s full-scale thin-film manufacturing line equipment which will include all solar cell manufacturing peripheral equipment. In addition, ULVAC will provide all production training and start-up of the manufacturing line which will handle 1.1 x 1.4-meter substrates.
NexPower is expected to operate the factory at a production volume rate of 12.5 megawatts (MW) of silicon based solar cells per year and plans to expand production volume gradually, with an ultimate production goal of 100 MW per year. The plant will be located in Hsinchu, Taiwan, and is expected to begin operations in the first quarter of 2009.
