March 22, 2011 — Mitsui Chemicals Tohcello Inc. (MCTI), a wholly owned subsidiary of Mitsui Chemicals Inc. (Tokyo), and Scientex Berhad (Malaysia) reached an agreement to form a new joint venture company and construct production facilities in Malaysia to manufacture solar cell encapsulants under the SOLAR EVA brand.

The JV, MCTI SCIENTEX SOLAR SDN BHD, will manufacture and sell SOLAR EVA solar cell encapsulants, starting commercial operations in early 2012. It will be a 50/50 venture between the two companies, with combined capital of 45 million Malaysia ringgit (MYR), or about $14.9 million US. The company will be led by Tetsuo Masuda, president. Masuda is currently an executive officer of MCTI.

The companies expect demand for solar cell encapsulation materials and technologies to grow 20% annually over the next few years.

MCTI and Scientex have an established working relationship with another JV. MCTI SCIENTEX SOLAR SDN BHD chose to locate the production facilities in Malaysia to allow it to respond to the needs of expanding Asian markets and customers in the areas of both manufacturing and sales. In addition, the new production facility will bring MCTI’s annual production capacity to 50,000 tons, with a possibility of further facility expansion.
