Silver-free solar PV achieves 19.7% efficiency with PERC processing

SCHOTT Solar AG combined its recent developments in electroplated copper contacts instead of silver, and backside passivation with PERC and aluminum screen printing to make a 156mm2 solar cell with near-20% efficiency.

December 13, 2011 — SCHOTT Solar AG combined its recent developments in electroplated copper contacts instead of silver, and backside passivation with PERC and aluminum screen printing to make a 156mm2solar cell with near-20% efficiency.

Fraunhofer ISE confirmed the 19.7% efficiency with a measurement commissioned by SCHOTT Solar.

SCHOTT use standard production processes to make the high-efficiency solar cell. The frontside has electroplated copper contacts. The backside is processed by passivated emitter and rear contact (PERC) technology and aluminum screen printing.

If long-term stability can be demonstrated successfully — SCHOTT Solar’s next goal — the technology could eliminate expensive silver from solar cell manufacturing.

The research project Las VeGaS: 18% solar cell efficiency with nickel-copper plating on the front side of a multicrystalline cell.

Passivated emitter and rear contact (PERC): Monocrystalline cell efficiency of 19.9%.
