Siltronic Samsung Wafer Begins Production

Siltronic Samsung Wafer Pte. Ltd., a joint venture of Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and Siltronic AG — part of Wacker Chemie AG — has announced that it has commissioned and started production at a new silicon wafer production plant in Singapore.

The start of operations at the facility, which will produce 300-millimeter wafers, followed an 18-month construction period. By 2010, the joint venture plans to reach a monthly production capacity of 300,000 wafers with an overall investment amounting to US $1 billion.

Siltronic CEO Wilhelm Sittenthaler emphasized the strategic importance of the joint venture with Samsung, saying that the commissioning, “is a key milestone in further expanding our presence on Asia’s growth markets.”
