Sharp Solar Opens First U.S. Facility

October 16, 2003 [] Sharp Corporation is officially opening its first solar panel manufacturing facility outside of Japan in Memphis, Tennessee. Approximately 70 people are directly employed at the solar manufacturing operations plant located at Sharp Plaza Boulevard that will assemble solar panels for residential and commercial installations. Media check-in for the event begins at 10:00 a.m. today. Interviews and photo opportunities start at 10:25 a.m. The ribbon-cutting and solar production facility tour begins at 11:00 a.m. Guests will include: Toshishige Hamano, Group General Manager, International Business Group, Sharp Corporation; Toshiaki Urushisako, Sharp Electronics CEO; Edwin D. Hill, President of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers; A.C. Wharton, Mayor of Shelby County; Memphis Mayor W.W. Herenton; Makoto Takahashi, President, Sharp Manufacturing Company of America; Matthew Kisber, Commissioner, State of Tennessee Economic and Community Development Commission; Ron Kenedi, General Manager of Solar Systems Division; and Glenn Hamer, Executive Director, Solar Electric Industries Association.
