Sharp Increases Cell Capacity

July 22, 2002 [SolarAccess.com] Sharp Corp. said Tuesday it has increased its annual production capacity of solar cells to 148 MW from 94 MW to meet growing demand for environmentally friendly solar power generation. Sharp spent ¥4.5 billion (US$39 million) for the capacity increase at its plant in the town of Shinjo, Nara Prefecture, the major consumer electronics maker said. The expanded capacity is enough to power some 40,000 households. Sharp announced plans to increase its capacity to 200 MW earlier this year and plans to achieve that by March 2003.
