Semprius HCPV pilot line lands in NC

North Carolina gave Semprius a $7.88+ million incentives package to build its pilot production plant in Henderson, NC. The plant could employ over 200 people with 35MW capacity.

July 22, 2011 – BUSINESS WIRE — The North Carolina Department of Commerce provided high concentration solar photovoltaics (HCPV) developer Semprius Inc. with a $7.88+ million incentives package to build its pilot production plant in Henderson, NC: a State of North Carolina Job Development Investment Grant and grants from the Golden LEAF Foundation, Vance County, the One North Carolina Fund, and the North Carolina Community College System.

North Carolina’s incentive offer was predicated on a $20 million investment from Siemens in the company, which was originally spun out of Rogers Lab.

Semprius will begin construction on the pilot HCPV module production plant later this month. Expected to be operational in August 2012, it will have an initial capacity of 5MW and is expandable to 35MW as needed. Phase I will be 50,000sq.ft. and Semprius will employ 60 people. Within a few years, Semprius expects to use 150,000sq.ft., employing 256 people. Semprius will make an $89.7 million capital investment in the pilot plant, and the plant will draw $120 million in investment to the region. Semprius predicts 6GW CPV demand by 2020; GTM Research puts the number at about 1000MW per year by 2015.

Semprius combines extremely tiny solar cells with low-cost, efficient optics to create HCPV modules with reliability and performance advantages. The assembly takes place in an automated manufacturing process, leveraging standard manufacturing equipment and commodity materials.

Semprius Inc. develops high-efficiency, low-cost high concentration photovoltaic (HCPV) solar modules. For more information, please visit www.semprius.com.
