December 21, 2011 — Oerlikon Solar’s 2nd generation ThinFab end-to-end thin-film silicon photovoltaics (PV) production line reduces capital expenditure (capex) by more than 20%, according to the company. The Si modules cost around $0.5/Wp (?0.35/Wp); estimated price is $1/Wp, including engineering support and performance guarantees.

The previous generation ThinFab line hit ?0.43/Wp (China) production costs, Oerlikon Solar revealed when announcing its PV tech development partnership with the International Cooperation Center for China Renewable Energy Society (CRES).

The 2nd generation ThinFab line offers increased manufacturing line output and module efficiency, and low energy usage. It also has a new narrow-gap reactor design for silicon deposition.

Oerlikon Solar will introduce the new ThinFab at the World Future Energy Summit 2012 (WFES) in Abu Dhabi at the Swiss Pavilion/7200, January 16-19, 2012. Further details will be released at the official product launch. China’s Premier¬†Wen Jiabao is scheduled to attend WFES.
