July 13, 2011 — SEMI released standard SEMI PV17-0611: Specification for Virgin Silicon Feedstock Materials for Photovoltaic Applications, covering virgin silicon feedstock materials produced by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) processes, metallurgical refining processes, or other processes.
SEMI says that material grades for photovoltaics (PV) silicon vary widely, due to an ever-growing number of silicon suppliers. Users and suppliers need a common language to define silicon quality and wafer performance, which the standard seeks to define. In addition to feedstock material specifications, the standard defines common industry terms. The goal is “consistent silicon solar cells,” said James Amano, senior director, SEMI Standards and EHS.
Polysilicon and cell manufacturers can use the standard as a reference to specify chemical (donor concentration), dimensional (chunk, rod, bricks), and packaging characteristics on their purchase orders for feedstock materials for solar-grade silicon. In addition, PV17-0611 lists the test methods to validate characteristics.
CVD processes include the Siemens process, fluidized bed processes, powder processes, and other processes using distilled silane or halosilane compounds used in the growth and casting of single crystalline ingots. Other methods of growing multicrystalline Si for solar cells wafers are also included.
There are now a total of 17 published SEMI Standards for photovoltaics manufacturing, and there are over 25 additional PV standardization efforts underway. Since 2007, over 400 PV industry experts in more than 20 task forces have developed and published SEMI PV standards covering equipment, materials, and test methods used in crystalline cell, module and thin-film manufacturing processes.
