Italy Orders New Delhi Solar Photovoltaics

July 13, 2004 [] New Delhi-based Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has landed a Rs.60 million (US$1.3 million) order from an Italian firm for supplying solar photovoltaic (PV) cells. The order for the supply of monocrystalline solar cells to be used by Italy-based S.E. Projects to manufacture PV modules for installation in Italy and Germany is a major breakthrough, the state-owned engineering major said Monday. This is the second such contract of its kind for a PV delivery from BHEL to Italy. The cells will be manufactured at a facility set up by BHEL at its electronics division in Bangalore. Besides this order, BHEL has also exported PV modules to countries like Australia and Germany. Solar PV is becoming increasingly popular in countries like Germany with legislation being enacted to encourage solar and wind power use.
