Is Solar a commodity?

The solar industry is feeling some growing pains at the moment. This is especially true in established solar markets in Europe and US. With module prices at 0.71 cents/watt in the market, one would ask, is solar energy a commodity? Has the industry stop innovating and focuses only on the cheapest price? I am happy to discover that Silicon Valley has not stopped innovating. One just has to look at the new innovation in processes and raw materials processing to know that we barely scratch the surface in terms of solar innovation.
