France-Based Solar Plant Triples PV Capacity

June 8, 2004 [] France-based Total Energie approved the construction of a euro 6-million (US$ 7.4 million) photovoltaic (PV) solar panel production plant in Saint-Martin-du-Touch, in the Greater Toulouse area of France. The plant will be owned by Tenesol Technologies, a specially created, wholly-owned subsidiary of Total Energie. In response to the very strong growth of the PV solar energy market in Europe, especially Germany, Total said they have decided to build a plant with a capacity of 15 MW, rather than the originally planned 5 MW. The plant is expected to create around 70 jobs. According to Total, the plant’s production capacity will be equivalent to around 6% of estimated European production capacity in 2003, and is close to ten times the total capacity of photovoltaic systems connected to the grid in metropolitan France at end-2003.
