DoE finalizes $197M loan guarantee for SoloPower CIGS projects

The CIGS firm gets DoE signoff on its two new CIGS plants in Oregon, and an upgrade to a site in CA.

August 19, 2011 – The US Department of Energy has finalized a $197M loan guarantee for SoloPower to back its new CIGS thin-film module facilities. The DoE loan was first offered in Feb. of this year.

The loan guarantee will support construction and operation of the company’s two new CIGS plants in Portland, OR, and an existing other in San Jose, CA, with >400MW of combined annual output. (The project also will create 450 permanent jobs, plus 270 jobs for construction.)

“Investments in projects like SoloPower stimulate job creation, strengthen America’s competitiveness and will help lower the cost of clean, renewable energy,” said US Energy Secretary Steven Chu, in a statement.

The original plans were to build the proposed $340M site in Wilsonville, OR — but local opposition to required urban planning changes prompted the company to head a few miles south to a mothballed Nike distribution center.
